Following on from the successful Institutes held since 2003, the University of Hong Kong Libraries is pleased to announce the 12th Annual Library Leadership Institute with the theme of Library Leadership in the Asia Pacific Century.

This residential Institute will provide library directors and senior librarians from the Asia region with the unique opportunity to develop new skills in the volatile area of management and leadership in the information sector. The program will provide a cost effective means of accessing the excellent management training services provided by experts in the field from North America, New Zealand, China and Hong Kong.

The primary objectives of the Institute are:

1. To develop and enhance management and leadership qualities in academic and research librarians in the Asia region, and;

2. To enhance collaboration and foster relations among academic and research libraries in the region.

The Institute will be conducted over 5 days. It must be emphasized that this is not a conference where attendees sit and listen to papers. This is an Institute requiring all attendees to be fully participative enabling them to explore their own leadership and management styles as well as learning new techniques from facilitators and from other attendees. The Institute will focus on the individual manager's role in providing leadership within a complex and changing library environment.


Institute Content

Formal sessions

Over the course of the 5 days, participants will engage in learner-driven activities designed to build skills and awareness required of leaders in today’s library environment. These sessions will be a pleasing mix of formal presentation, small group discussions and interactive simulation activities.


Case Study

In addition to a wide range of Formal Sessions to be covered during the formal sessions, a case study outlining problems will be given to groups of participants to enable them to work as a team and, using the range of skills learnt during the Institute, develop a viable solution. Set times will be allocated during the Institute to enable case study teams to get together and work on a solution. The Institute will wind up with each team providing a presentation on their findings.

ENGLISH will be the mode of instruction, with limited Chinese translations supplementing.

Targeted Audience

The Institute is limited to 40 participants who will be academic and research librarians invited from Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and other countries. These participants will be:

Jeffrey Trzeciak  

Jeffrey has more than twenty-five years’ experience working in academic and public libraries.  In July 2012, Jeffrey began his tenure as University Librarian at Washington University in St. Louis.  In his first year of leadership, Jeffrey has overseen the drastic expansion of Washington University’s Olin Library operating hours, the creation of formal partnerships with the Writing Center and the Office of Geographic Information Systems, and the acquisition of over $3.5 million in academic resources. In addition, Jeffrey has directed the formation of the Visual Media Research Lab: a Libraries-based resource that builds upon the strengths of the Film & Media Archive and Modern Graphic History Library. This effort was designed to mobilize the Libraries’ visual research collections, making them more easily integrated into teaching, learning, and research.

Jeffrey previously served as University Librarian at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario Canada, Associate Dean at Wayne State University Library System in Detroit, Michigan and Head of Systems at Wright State University Libraries in Dayton, Ohio.  Under Jeffrey’s leadership, the McMaster Library became the first Canadian recipient of the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.  In 2004, Jeffrey was recognized for his innovation by Library Journal in their “Movers and Shakers” edition.  He is also a graduate of the Frye Leadership Institute (2005) sponsored by EDUCAUSE, CLIR, and Emory University and has spoken internationally on a variety of topics including digital library initiatives, web 2.0, organizational change, and library innovation.

Jeffrey holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Dayton and a master’s degree in library sciences from Indiana University.

Howard Amos  

Howard is the University Librarian at the University of Otago in New Zealand. Since qualifying as an Information Management specialist and Librarian Howard has worked in both the private and public sectors in Libraries and telecommunications. He has over 20 years’ experience working for library software companies and as a practicing librarian developing library digital services. Howard led the project to develop an Australasian inter-lending and document delivery system that has now been deployed as VDX. While working at the State Library of NSW in the early 1990’s he established the first Australian non-academic network of libraries connected to the internet and chaired the NSW Government’s internet technical committee. Later he worked for a major telecommunications service provider, managing international outsourcing contracts.

Howard has substantial professional experience in the application of information technology in higher education. He served as Chief Investigator and chaired the technical group for the establishment of the Dictionary of Australian Artists Online (now Design and Art Australia Online). While Deputy University Librarian at UNSW Howard established the Library Repository Services team and built library support services for the management of data for research projects and led the development of expertise in data librarianship and collaborative programmes that support e-Research. Howard has contributed to the understanding of the use and re-use of research data, leading a study into how academics use and share research data.

Howard began his role as University Librarian at the University of Otago in October 2010. He represents New Zealand University Libraries on the Australasian consortium for electronic resources and is a Director of the Library Consortium of New Zealand (LCoNZ). Howard contributes to the development of e-Research support infrastructure in New Zealand through the development of research data management metadata standards. His interests lie in managing organisational change and the transition to the fully digital library. He has carried out international benchmarking activities and the development of quality frameworks include balanced scorecard processes for libraries.

Peter Sidorko  

Peter Sidorko has enjoyed a career in academic libraries spanning thirty years and is currently the University Librarian at The University of Hong Kong (HKU).  In this position he has full responsibility for leading and directing all aspects of the HKUL network of 6 libraries.  Peter started the University of Hong Kong Annual Library Leadership Institute in 2003 following on from his three years as a facilitator for the EDUCAUSE Australasian Leadership Institute from 2000 to 2003.  He has been actively involved in the organization and facilitation of the Institute ever since.   Peter is also the immediate past President elect of the Hong Kong Library Association, serving from 2011-2012. He also holds several important honorary international positions. He is a member of the Board of Directors of CLOCKSS, the Chair of the Asia Pacific Regional Council Executive Committee of OCLC, and a Board member of the NDLTD (Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations). His research interests include library management, user behaviours, information literacy and learning spaces and he has published widely in these areas.  His most recent publication is the chapter “Hong Kong projects and trends” in the book Better Library and Learning Spaces (Les Watson, editor) released in October 2013,   He has also presented at almost 100 conferences and seminars, several of which have been published as proceedings.

Dr. Wu Jianzhong graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages of East China Normal University in 1978. He received MA degree for Library Science (East China Normal University) in 1982 and Ph.D for Library and Information Science (University of Wales,Aberystwyth, UK) in 1992. He is currently Director of the Shanghai Library and Institution of Scientific and Technical Information of Shanghai since January 2002. Other social positions include: Vice President of China Society for Library Science, President of Shanghai Library Association. He served on the Governing Board of IFLA for two terms during 2001-2005 and Chief Designer on Theme of Expo Shanghai in 2010. He has published over 20 books include: The Library of the 21st Century, New Library Buildings of the World, The Theme Development of World Exposition, Harmony in Progress, and The Ubiquitous Library, etc.

Wu Jianzhong  

YC is Deputy University Librarian of the University of Hong Kong Libraries. He has over 30 years of experience in academic and public libraries in Hong Kong. He has also been teaching library courses in Hong Kong since 1988.

YC received his bachelor degree at the University of Hong Kong in 1980 and doctoral degree in information and library science at the University of Wales Aberystwyth in 2001. He has served in a number of different positions since joining the University of Hong Kong Libraries in 1987, namely Special Collections Librarian, Reader Services Librarian, Fung Ping Shan Librarian and Head of Main Library Services. YC has a keen interest in Hong Kong studies, particularly in the history of libraries in Hong Kong and digitization of Hong Kong materials.

Associate Professor, Fudan University

Zhan Yiqiang  

Yiqiang Zhan obtained his Ph.D. in physics from Fudan University, China in 2005 before moving to ISMN-CNR bologna, Italy as a postdoc. From 2007, he continued his research in Linkoping University, Sweden initially as a postdoc and then as an assistant professor. Recently, he joined Fudan University as an associate professor. His research interests include the use of Synchrotron based techniques together with device study to investigate the organic spintronics related topics.

A small number of scholarships valued at HKD$1,600 may be available for applicants who require financial assistance.
