Library Extended Opening Hours during Revision Week and Assessment Period

Main Library Extended Opening Hours

The opening hours of the Main Library will be extended for the coming Revision Week and Assessment Period from 22nd April to 15th May 2011.

Opening Hours:

Monday – Sunday: 8.30 a.m. – 6.00 a.m. of the following day

Medical Library Extended Opening Hours

The opening hours of the Yu Chun Keung Medical Library will be extended for the coming Revision Week and Assessment Period from 2nd to 20th May 2011.

Opening Hours:

Monday – Friday: 8.15 a.m. – 6.00 a.m. of the following day

Saturday: 8.30 a.m. – 6.00 a.m. of the following day

Sundays & Public Holidays: 10.00 a.m. – 6.00 a.m. of the following day

Library Opening Hours during Ching Ming Festival / Easter Holidays

5 April 2011 (Ching Ming Festival) and 22-25 April 2011 (Easter Holidays):

Main Library, AV & Reserve Collection, Fung Ping Shan Library, Special Collections, Law Library will open from 10am to 7pm.

Medical Library will open from 10am to 5pm.

Dental Library, Education Library, and Music Library will be closed.

The Main Library Student Learning Centre will remain open all hours for the use of CURRENT STAFF and CURRENT STUDENTS ONLY.

Mini Used Book Sale on 1 April 2011

We are pleased to announce that the Libraries is going to hold a Mini Used Book Sale on 1 April 2011.

Books for sale are duplicates donated by our supporters or withdrawn copies from the library collection. Books from various subjects, both in Chinese and English, are priced at HK$20 and up. Also available is a selection of fiction for leisure reading.

To support going green, plastic bags will not be provided. A specially designed recyclable bag will be available at HK$10 for sale at the venue.

Main Library 3/F Renovation

For some months now the Libraries have undertaken initial planning into creating a more dynamic learning environment to be housed on the 3rd floor of the Main Library. The entire 3rd floor of the Main Library will be renovated to create a learning commons style facility that will provide a range of learning spaces suitable to different learning styles including reflective self-study as well as collaborative study in small and larger groups …(click to learn more)

New Head of the University of Hong Kong Libraries appointed

Mr. Peter E. Sidorko, HKU Librarian

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Peter E. Sidorko as Librarian of the HKU Libraries by the University Council to succeed Dr. Tony Ferguson, who has retired from the post.

Mr. Sidorko’s term of office started on 1 January 2011. He has been serving the University as Deputy Librarian since December 2001.  Mr. Sidorko possesses substantial professional experience in academic libraries as well as rich knowledge and solid experience in the application of information technology in higher education.  Apart from a strong commitment to teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange, Mr. Sidorko has outstanding management, communications and people skills.

The appointment of Mr. Sidorko has been made after a global search by a Search Committee of the University chaired by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui.

Professor Tsui was very pleased with the appointment. He thanked Dr. Tony Ferguson for his many years of service to the University and for his contributions in developing and strengthening its libraries.

Professor Tsui added that he believed that under the leadership of Mr Sidorko, HKU Libraries would continue to provide the best service to all members of the University community.

"The University Libraries will be able to play an active and important role in supporting the University’s strategic directions, e-learning, e-scholarship and the future operation of the Learning Commons," Professor Tsui said.

“Experiential Learning of Ecology & Biodiversity: East Africa” – Exhibition

Venue: Main Library Foyer, HKU

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity of the United Nations. The exhibit will showcase the African experience of the School of Biological Sciences, HKU with colorful pictures of wild animals, the great migration and nature conservation. Post-trip reflections of the students and a selection of books are also presented to help raise the awareness of nature conservation and the importance of biodiversity.

The Knovel University Challenge: new grand prize

In response to the record breaking participation, Knovel has upped the stakes. To reward the schools with the most activity, they’re  adding an additional prize for the top performing school. At the end of the contest, a student at the school with the most entries will be awarded a brand new eco-friendly Toshiba laptop.
