ORCiD to Make Your Research Unique & Findable and
SAGE Open: Open Access Publishing for You to Choose

by Mr David Palmer
Associate University Librarian (Digital Strategies & Technical Services), University Libraries

Date: January 22, 2014 (Wednesday)
Time: 1:00-2:00pm
Venue: Room P6-03, Graduate House

Sandwiches will be provided. All are welcome.

Abstract:
ORCiD and SAGE Open are two new initiatives of the Libraries to support HKU researchers with a view to enhancing the visibility of their research to not only scholars but also potential collaborators in outside organizations, potential research postgraduate students, and interested members of the public.

ORCiD: This is an international initiative to create and use unique scholar identifiers for each scholar in the world. Universities, publishers, funding agencies, scholars, and anybody who search for them, can use ORCiDs to uniquely identify and retrieve data on scholars. This will be especially beneficial to authors with Chinese names that may be quite common. The Libraries will begin creating ORCiDs for HKU professoriate staff in December 2013.

SAGE Open: Agreement has been made with SAGE Open to publish 100 articles by HKU authors in SAGE Open. This peer reviewed journal is gold open access, which means the author, the institution or the funder pays an Article Processing Charge (APC), rather than readers paying subscriptions. HKU authors can now choose to publish in SAGE Open, as the APC for up to 100 articles will be covered under the aforementioned agreement. The resulting published peer reviewed article is available to everyone in open access. Articles may span the full spectrum of the social and behavioral sciences and the humanities. This is another initiative to promote open access (OA), following the Springer OA initiative done in the last triennium, which mainly covered the science and technology-related disciplines. OA journals can increase readership, enable readership amongst those who cannot afford subscriptions, and enable a faster cycle of, “research – publish – research”.

Find@HKUL: Discover the collection at HKUL in one go

Published by under Breaking News

Find@HKUL is a search tool that helps users discover the HKUL collection through a single search box in one go.

The tool has four tabs, with the default set to the Books + Articles tab. Each tab encompasses a unique dataset. The Books tab enables users to search holdings of the HKUL library catalogue (Dragon). One can also place requests, view the circulation record or even connect to HKALL in this environment. The Articles tab provides access to a large index of articles, conference papers, overseas theses and book chapters. Searching the Articles tab is similar to searching a huge cross-disciplinary database, with full text articles just a click or two away. The Extended Search tab offers a real-time connection to specialized databases, resources which might not be covered under the Articles tab, providing deeper searches into the HKUL collection.

The simple search interface of Find@HKUL facilitates novice searchers to find pertinent information in support of their learning needs. At the same time, the ease of information discovery helps capitalize on the library resources subscribed for the community.

Explore the search tips at http://lib.hku.hk/primo/help/

With the introduction of this new search tool, ResearchPro and ArticleFinder have retired from our service.
