Discover Global Archives From Your Desk: Digitised primary sources for research and essays
Join guest speaker Oliver for a tour of the primary source collections digitised by AM. These global collections span the medieval to the modern and relate to area studies, culture, business, literature, postcolonialism, travel and more. Whether you are writing an essay, a dissertation, a research paper or a syllabus, this workshop will make it easier to navigate the digitised collections at HKU and find relevant primary sources for your work. The session will include a demonstration of these collections, time to explore the sources yourselves, and a Q&A.
Speaker's Bio:
Oliver Brafield works in AM's Engagement team and enjoys connecting researchers at all levels with exciting and relevant primary sources. Oliver previously completed a master's degree in history, then worked in AM's Editorial department, helping to publish some of the collections that he now helps users to navigate.

Everything You Need to Know about Writing a Manuscript
Have you ever wondered why are abstracts called “abstracts”? Do you have trouble deciding what to include in figure.1 of your paper? In this workshop, Dr. Yiu (senior editor of Device at Cell Press) will share tips on how to write and submit a scientific paper, and how to increase the visibility of your research. He will also briefly present and explain the journal ecosystem of Cell Press in the physical sciences, such as the scope of Chem, Matter, Joule, and Device. Learn the basics of writing a research paper and test your ability to spot bad languages on Oct-16!
Speaker info:
Yuen obtained his PhD in condensed matter physics from the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and did postdoctoral research at Ames Laboratory. Before joining Cell Press, he had worked as a popular science reporter and editor at the American Institute of Physics, and at Science as a commissioning editor. At Device, he alongside the editorial team oversees a wide scope of articles ranging from implantable biomedical devices to virtual reality displays. He is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. He is currently based in Hong Kong.

Visualizing the Humanities Gale Digital Scholar Lab
Today, advances in digital humanities allows scholars to make use of exciting new tools to cast wide-ranging nets into this vast ocean, helping to identify macro trends and patterns that would have been impossible to find via traditional methods.
Gale Digital Scholar Lab is a new intuitive platform that allows uninitiated users to make full use of cutting edge text mining technology intuitively without the need of any programming language or special IT skills beyond the mouse and the keyboard.
Join Senior Product Manager Masaki Morisawa in this session where he will guide users on how to conduct statistical and natural language analysis on thousands of historical texts such as newspaper backfiles, government documents, and much, much more!

[AI Literacy 2.0: Student-Led Journey from Theory to AI Solution Development] Session 1: Unveiling AI beyond ChatGPT
Abstract
Unveiling AI beyond ChatGPT invites participants to discover the broader world of artificial intelligence and gain a well-rounded understanding of its foundations. This workshop introduces core types of AI, including Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Big Data Analysis, and Reinforcement Learning, while exploring the dimensions that shape how AI is understood and applied. Through engaging discussions and a wide range of fascinating examples, the session highlights diverse applications of AI across industries as well as the ethical debates and controversies surrounding it. Designed to broaden horizons and spark curiosity, the workshop emphasizes not just what AI can do today, but how to think critically about its impact. By the end, participants will walk away with a solid, comprehensive foundation for understanding AI beyond the hype.

[AI Literacy 2.0: Student-Led Journey from Theory to AI Solution Development] Session 3: Building your own AI
Abstract
This interactive workshop offers a hands-on introduction to training object detection AI models without coding. Using Nocodile AI, a no-code platform developed by our team, participants will explore the complete AI pipeline: from collecting and labelling data to training custom models and deploying them. The experience culminates in deploying models onto real robots and running them in action, offering a vivid look at how AI interacts with the physical world. Along the way, the workshop highlights real-life challenges such as data quality, accuracy, and system limitations, encouraging creativity and problem-solving. By the end, participants will have built and tested AI models firsthand while gaining valuable insights into the practical realities of bringing AI from concept to deployment.
Learning outcomes:
In this session, learners will
- Train an object detection AI model from scratch
- Deploy the model onto real robots and test its performance
- Learn practical concepts in data collection and labelling
- Recognize real-world challenges of applying AI to practical problems
