The Opening of the Ground Floor Entrance/Partial Opening of the Ground Floor, Main Library

The ground floor entrance to the Main Library will re-open on Monday, 23 April 2018 at 8:30 am.

The new entrance is located at the North side of the Old Wing facing the Main Building adjacent to the Sun Yat-Sen Plaza. The entrance will serve as a point of access to the Main Library and to the future Breakout and Leisure space leading into the Think Tank with its expansive study areas and discussion room.

In addition, with a significant portion of the floor space on the ground floor being completed and the May Revision and Assessment period soon upon us, the Main Library will install temporary carrel seating and open the e-Learning lab to support patron’s study needs during this period.

Minor renovation works will continue with noise levels kept to a minimum.

Unveiling the Veil: Muslim Women in Hong Kong Art Exhibition

In collaboration with the Muslim Women in Hong Kong Organisation Committee, the Main Library is pleased to present Unveiling the Veil: Muslim Women in Hong Kong Art Exhibition at the 2^ndFloor Atrium/ExhibitionsArea of the Main Library from 18 April 2018 to 3 May 2017.

The exhibition will showcase the creative art pieces made by Muslim women living in Hong Kong.

This exhibition seeks to help students discover and understand the often stereotyped and shielded, yet diverse and vivid, voices of the Muslim women, who share with us the same living space of this multicultural city.

Currently, roughly 300,000 Muslims are living in Hong Kong. Indonesians, Chinese, and South Asians are the three major cultural groups while there are also Muslims from other parts of the world such as the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia. With Hong Kong positioning itself as a multicultural hub, mutual understanding, cultural relationships, and social cohesion among the city’s sub-communities are crucially important.

To complement the exhibition, the Committee has also organised two “meet-the-artists” talks:

Paper and Ink: Ming and Qing Dynasty Manuscripts from the Jiayetang Collection, Fung Ping Shan Library, The University of Hong Kong Exhibition

The Main Library will re-exhibit the Paper and Ink: Ming and Qing Dynasty Manuscripts from the Jiayetang Collection, Fung Ping Shan Library, The University of Hong Kong exhibition at the 2^nd Floor Atrium/Exhibition Area of the Main Library from 3 – 17 April 2018.

Two thousand and seventeen noted the eighty-fifth anniversary of the University of Hong Kong’s Fung Ping Shan Library.  Celebrated by sinologists, historians, librarians and those with even a passing interest in Chinese libraries as one of the world’s great East Asian Libraries, the University of Hong Kong takes great pride in its achievements, its history and its enormous contributions to East Asian scholarship and beyond.

To mark its history and achievements, the re-exhibition of the Paper and Ink: Ming and Qing Dynasty Manuscripts from the Jiayetang Collection, Fung Ping Shan Library, The University of Hong Kong and an accompanying online booklet are presented as an illustration of the depth and beauty of the collection as well as a celebratory reflection on the Library’s future. The online booklet is available at http://lib.hku.hk/publications/paperandink.pdf.

The twelve manuscripts on display have been selectively chosen to highlight the often hidden beauty that lies in such texts with their calligraphy and illustrations worked by hand with brush and ink.  One can only be left in awe upon gazing at the manuscript of the Confucian classic Congshan Du Zhouyi (A Treatise on the Book of Changes), by Fang Shisun (Song) or Shuofu (A Collection of Random Sketches), by Tao Zongyi (Yuan), said to be a “world treasure” and made before the book itself was printed.  The accompanying panels to these and the other manuscripts will assist your appreciation of what is to be found in this exhibition.

As we speed through this digital age, this exhibition provides us with an opportunity to pause and reflect, to marvel at what has preceded us and to ponder the bright future that lies ahead for the Fung Ping Shan Library as it hastens towards its centenary.

Exhibition of the Szeto Wah Collection

You are cordially invited to visit the Exhibition of the Szeto Wah Collection. The exhibition will be held at Special Collections, 1/F Main Library, The University of Hong Kong, from 8 February to 11 March 2018.

The “Szeto Wah Collection” is permanently housed in the Libraries’ Special Collections since the handover ceremony in January 2012. The University of Hong Kong Libraries is very fortunate to have been chosen by the family of Mr Szeto Wah as the recipient of this unique Collection.

This exhibition features Szeto Wah’s private book collection, illustrating his diverse interests in different genres through which visitors are offered a unique glimpse of his thoughts and ideals.

With the overwhelming demand and positive response from the Libraries’ past Santa Paws and Dr Dog sessions, the University of Hong Kong Libraries will host two Santa Paws sessions during the December 2017 Assessment period.

The first Take A Break Santa Paws session will be held at the Medical Library on 15 December 2017 from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM. The second session will be held at the 2^nd floor Lounge Area, Main Library on 18 December 2017 from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM

It is well documented that therapy dogs can contribute to calmness and overall emotional well-being. Therapy dog programmes are being offered in many universities around the world, in libraries, university health services and student counselling units. It is hoped that these sessions will benefit HKU students during the assessment period by encouraging less stress and anxiety by taking a break from their studies.

Relocation of collections on the G/F Main Library

To pave way for the renovation of G/F Main Library in the Second Semester, the following collections will be relocated in December 2017:

• 600 to 699 Technology → Compact shelves on G/F
• 800 to 899 Literature → Compact shelves on G/F
• B, BB, BC Leisure Reading → 2/F Main Library (New Wing)

Please consult the temporary signage on G/F and 2/F for more details.  Thank you very much for your tolerance to the disturbance that might be caused by the relocation.

Peru’s Memory: 1890 – 1950 Photo Exhibition

In collaboration with the Consulate General of Peru in Hong Kong and Macao, the Main Library is pleased to present Peru’s Memory: 1890 – 1950 photo exhibition at the 2^nd Floor Atrium/Exhibition Area of the Main Library from 13– 30 November 2017.

Thirty-three photographs have been selected from the “Fotografia Memoria del Perú” by photographers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (1890-1950) capturing the history and everyday life in Peru, including the best works of the “Golden Age of Peruvian Photography” ¹.

“Thanks to these images and to many others like those, Peru, as we know it today, began to emerge before itself as an apprehensible reality. The natural wonders of its territory, the great monuments of its pre-Columbian past, the ancestral customs interwoven with the modernizing aspirations, the advance of the capitalist economy, and the social conflicts of a national society in formation.

Peru’s Memory: 1890 – 1950 photos allows us to revive some of the construction process and to value the talent of masters of the lens such as Max T. Vargas, Martin Chambi, Carlos and Miguel Vargas, Juan Manuel Figueroa Aznar, Sebastian Rodriguez, Baldomero Alejos, and Walter 0. Runcie, to mention only some of the most conspicuous in this selection.”¹
