Ink Rubbing Workshop

Ink rubbing is a millennium-old technique that uses ink and paper to reproduce inscriptions or patterns carved in artefacts. As a vital medium for dissemination, ink rubbings faithfully record and inherit Chinese traditional culture, history, and art. Throughout the centuries, original relics such as stone tablets and statues may deteriorate or no longer exist, but frequently their rubbings survived, serving as essential historical and cultural references.

To complement the International Preservation Week, the Libraries’ Preservation Centre is hosting a series of ink rubbing workshops to appreciate the beauty of this art form. The workshop includes:

  • A brief introduction to Chinese ink rubbing, with reference to rubbings held by the HKUL
  • A demonstration of ink rubbing techniques
  • A hands-on ink rubbing session in which participants can create their own artworks

This workshop is held by the University of Hong Kong Libraries and sponsored by UGC Special Grant – GLAM Lab X Digital Scholarship.
