Synopsis

In his National Bestseller The Clash of Civilization and the Remaking of World Order, Samuel Huntington predicted a periodic clash of three civilizations in the new century, namely the West, the Islamic World, and Asia (led by the rise of China). This informal talk will outline Huntington's hypothesis, for the purpose of group discussions.

 

About the Speaker

book coverProfessor Lee graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1968. He subsequently received his Master's degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1970 and a Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario, Canada in 1972.

He then worked for Ontario Hydro in Canada for some 20 years, building dams and nuclear power plants. He has been a consultant to the Three Gorges Project and other energy and infrastructure projects in China for the past two decades.

Professor Lee joined his alma mater in 1994, where he is now a Pro-Vice-Chancellor and a Chair Professor in Geotechnical Engineering. He also serves on an array of government and non-government boards and committees. He is the Chairman of the Board of Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture and a member of the Culture and Heritage Commission, the Research Grants Council, the Slope Safety Technical Review Board, the Provisional Construction Industry Co-ordination Board, etc.
