Message from the University Libraries

 The Main Library and Medical Library will extend the opening hours for the coming Revision Week & Assessment Period from 11 pm, 1 December to 6 am, 21 December 2016:

Main Library: Daily:  8:30am – 6am of the following day Opening hours for Special Collections, AV Collection, and Level 3 Collaboration Zone will remain unchanged.

 Medical Library: Monday – Friday: 8:15 am – 6 am of the following day

Saturday:          8:30 am – 6 am of the following day

Sunday: 10 am – 6 am of the following day

Main Library Extended Opening Hours  (1-21 December 2016)

Remarks: The book drops on G/F will be available for service during closing hours of the entrance.

AV Collection and Special Collections

The opening hours of these two areas will remain unchanged during the extended opening hours of Main Library for the sake of energy saving.

2/F, Level 3 (Collaboration Zone) and 5/F Old Library Building

The opening hours of these three areas will remain unchanged during the extended opening hours of Main Library for the sake of energy saving.

All service counters will be closed outside the normal operating hours.  In order to thoroughly clean the library, all users and their possessions must be cleared by 6 am each morning.  Items not removed from each desk will be removed by staff on duty and can be collected at:

Main Library: After 9 am (10 am on Sundays and public holiday) at the Lending Services Counter on the 2/F;

Yu Chun Keung Medical Library: After 10 am at the Circulation Counter.

During the extended opening hours, contract security guards will be stationed in these two libraries to provide basic security services.  When the circulation counters are closed, users can check out/in books using the self-check stations (2/F and 4/F, Main Library, and G/F, Medical Library). While there is no counter service, all public computers, printers and copiers will be available but no refill of printing paper will be provided.

Message from The University Libraries

Library Closure on Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day

July 1, 2016 (Friday) will be a General Holiday.  The University Libraries will be closed on that day.

On that day, the Library Corner on G/F and the Study Zone on Level 3, Main Library, will remain open for the use by CURRENT STAFF and CURRENT STUDENTS ONLY.

To: All Library Patrons

To facilitate the removal of asbestos contained in the adhesive underneath the carpet of the Old Wing, the University contractor requires the following floors to be temporarily closed during the REVISED periods specified:

Owing to a lack of decanting space in the Main Library and the tight project schedule, we are unable to move books out of the affected floors while the removal work is in progress.  Instead, we will securely wrap the bookshelves in protective sheets and only allow authorized contractors to access the work sites in accordance with the environmental and building legislation in Hong Kong.  As a result, lending services of the affected library collections have to be suspended during the closure dates indicated.

We understand that the temporary service suspension will inevitably bring inconvenience to library patrons.  To minimise this inconvenience, we strongly advise that you borrow the materials you need before the scheduled closure.  Requests for materials kept on the work sites will be filled as far as possible by interlibrary loans from other local/overseas libraries.  Items belonging to the affected floors should continue to be returned according to the due dates.  However, returned items will be stored in a special storage pending re-shelving and no loan service will be provided for them until re-opening of the affected floor.

A dedicated library webpage (http://lib.hku.hk/aaw) has been created to provide up-to-date progress of the above works.  Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.  For inquiries, please contact us at 3917-2202 (Lending Services) or 3917-2215 (Interlibrary Loans).

New fee for library cards

With the introduction of the 7-byte University Smart Card, the charge for new library cards will be adjusted from $35 to $50 with effect from 1 July 2016.   The card categories subject to this new fee are listed below for reference:

• Graduate borrower’s card
• Graduate reader’s card
• HKU Staff Spouse/Dependent Children Card (For applicants without a HKU Facilities Access Card)
• HKU SPACE temporary/part-time staff and student library card
• Centennial College temporary/part-time staff and student library card
• Temporary library card for external visitors

Important Message from the Libraries

The remaining value on the Libraries’ Stored Value Cards will no longer be refunded after 30 June 2016.
