Dexterity and Meticulousness: Preservation and Conservation of Library Collections

Established in 2010, the HKUL Preservation Centre is the pioneer facility in HK that is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of the library and archives’ collections. The centre devotes to maximize the lifespan and usefulness of the libraries’ collections for current and future patrons.

Conservators at the centre perform basic to complex conservation treatments on a wide range of collection materials. Other activities encompass exhibition and digitization preparation, collection assessment and survey, environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, emergency preparedness and response, creating protective housing for collections, and preservation education. Over the past 13 years,the Preservation Centre has responded to the enormous and growing needs in preservation expertise, expanding its services to the safeguarding of cultural and historical heritage at HKU and in the broader community.

To celebrate the International Preservation Week, the centre is hosting an exhibition and a series of ink rubbing workshops.
