CO 129 and the present index

The purpose of the present index is to facilitate scholars in their use of the 'Great Britain. Colonial Office Series 129' (Original Correspondence: Hong Kong). The series, covering the period from 1842-1951, including almost 40,000 despatches in some 400,000 pages, has become the basic reference material for research on Hong Kong history.

An index, published by the History Department, University of Hong Kong in 1997, was designed as a key to open up this rich body of material. That index, covering the years 1842-1926, is compiled by the same author and published on CD-Rom. Copies of the CD-Rom are available from the History Department, and can be consulted at the libraries of the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The present index completes the analysis of documents up to 1951.

The original CO 129 documents are deposited at the Public Record Office, Kew, London. They are also available on microfilm. In Hong Kong, microfilm copies are held by the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Public Records Office, Hong Kong.
