Can Consumption Drive Sustainable Economic Growth?

China Premium Database
+ National Accounts
+ Gross Domestic Product
+ Flow of Funds Accounts

The sustainability of China’s economic growth can only be achieved while keeping a rapid growth of debt. It is probably the only approach that is inevitable throughout the process unless there are any political changes.

In recent years, consumption has been regarded as the major driving force of economic growth, especially amid declining investment. However, if the economic environment is not prosperous enough to promote robust consumption, excess liquidity will flow into the speculation on different assets. As a result, economic growth will again be dependent on fixed assets investment. Yet, official data has shed light on the increasingly dominating role of consumption in driving economic growth. So, this is really confusing!

Confusion does not lie in the data authenticity, but rather in the fact that consumption has already contributed 64.5% to GDP growth (in the first three quarters in 2017) and that household consumption has taken up more than 60% of household disposable income. At the same time, the household disposable income to GDP ratio has surpassed 60%. As a developing economy with a population of 1.4 billion, these ratios are actually not low at all. So how can the economy sustain its growth going forward? There are a few answers to the question. First, to increase the household disposable income and thereby increasing the household spending power. Second, to exert greater fiscal efforts by raising government expenditures. Third, to encourage businesses to inject more capital investments. Yet, these driving forces come with trade-offs by posing the risk of a higher debt level.

However, consumption-led growth may not be the best for China’s economy. Since China is still a developing economy, the improvement in structural balance plus the broadening and deepening of horizontal and vertical development are actually stronger pillars for sustainable development. Sustainable economic growth depends upon a well-balanced economic and industrial structure before it transits to a consumption-led phase. Otherwise, the economy will ultimately end up overwhelmed by growing debt, not to mention the increasing household debt ratio.

The Bicon short implant: a thirty-year perspective / edited by Vincent J. Morgan.

D 617.674 B583

This book is a succinct and accessible compilation of over 30 years of knowledge concerning the Bicon system. It offers not only a history of dental implants and the science of osseointegration but also a vast collection of clinical examples that demonstrate Bicon’s capabilities. Bicon implants provide versatile, reliable treatment for a wide variety of clinical situations; they can successfully be placed in atrophic jaws, in sites that would require extensive bone grafting with longer implants, in tissue that has been compromised by medical conditions, and even in adolescent jaws that are still developing. With its proven track record of success, the Bicon system provides treatment opportunities for the benefit of clinicians, technicians, and patients by offering simple, predictable, and effective techniques. With everything from historical and theoretical origins to detailed step-by-step surgical and restorative guides, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in implantology.
