Title: What’s the optimum clinical protocol of Herbst appliance therapy? — an evidence-based prospective clinical study evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging 

Abstract: The small lower jaw is one of the most common problems seen in daily orthodontic clinic. The Herbst appliance is one of the most popular functional appliances which have been used to modify the growth of the lower jaws. Its mechanism is that the appliance advances the lower jaws, and then the growth of the lower jaws can be stimulated. To put the lower jaws anteriorly, there are two types of advancement, step-by-step advancement and one-step maximum advancement. Nowadays it is still controversial which type of advancement is better and how long the treatment time should be. Some studies showed the stepwise advancement with longer treatment time (1 year) is better than the conventional maximal jumping with shorter treatment time (7-8 months), but some researchers presented opposite results. The main limitation of previous studies may be that the x-ray examination for the lower jaw cannot detect unmineralized cartilage of the condyles. In this respect, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) shows its excellent capacity on visualizing the remodeling process of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with no radiation for human beings. Therefore, this study aims to use MRI to reveal the differences of TMJ remodeling between stepwise advancement and maximum jumping, the shorter and the longer treatment time, as well as the different characters between the adult and the adolescent patients during the Herbst appliance therapy.

The primary outcome of the study will be a quantitative comparison of the mandibular lengths between stepwise advancement group and maximum jumping group after 3, 6 months of treatment and at the end of the Herbst treatment using MRIs. The secondary outcome of the study is to confirm consolidation times of the newly formed bone in condyles and glenoid fossae of adult patients and adolescent patients. The results of this study will suggest an optimum clinical protocol of Herbst appliance therapy.

Films for the Feminist Classroom (FFC)

Films for the Feminist Classroom (FFC) is hosted by the Rutgers-based editorial offices of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society and the Rutgers Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

FFC, an online, open-access journal, publishes film reviews that provide a critical assessment of the value of films as pedagogical tools in the feminist classroom. Special features, such as interviews with filmmakers, are included to further promote engagement and discussion.

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

The production, collection, and distribution of accessible high quality research on Asian American Literature for students, teachers, and the general public is their goal.

They seek contributions that, while informed by the theoretical concerns of specialists in the field, are composed in order to be understood by non-specialists, including students and non-specialist teachers at the high school and college levels. It is their goal to use the internet to grant access to research in multiple ways: one, by going directly to the internet where many students and even faculty now begin their research rather than through a publisher and then via a proprietary database; and two, by emphasizing clear and jargon-free prose so that the complexity of research findings in the field can be accessed by readers with a variety of objectives, including the general reader seeking more information on this complex and sometimes misrepresented field.

In addition to traditional analytical interpretations of texts and contexts, they are interested in essays on the pedagogy of Asian American literature, overviews of the historical and cultural context of key texts, and also bibliographic overviews of relevant criticism.
