The Music Library offers three PCs and three iMacs with Internet connection and software applications in support of study and academic research. Five workstations are installed with Sibelius music notation software and a midi keyboard. The remaining PC has a scanner and Adobe Photoshop software installed. NVivo is available in PC 3. Each workstation can be booked via Book a Space. The Multimedia Stations allow Library users to enjoy the diverse Multimedia Collection during library hours. The stations are equipped with DVD, Blu-ray, CD, cassette players and TV monitors. No booking is required. A turntable and headphones are available upon request.
Course materials recommended by teaching staff are placed here. The collection consists of books, journal articles, scores, multimedia materials, and teacher-owned materials. These materials are for short-term loans.

All users holding valid HKU cards can use an Octopus card to purchase printing units in an Add Value Machine (AVM) that is located on the desk next to Self-check Station in the Library.

Three Discussion Rooms are equipped with Smartboards, projectors, power sockets and data ports. They can be booked via Book a Space. Laptops installed the software of smartboard & Sibelius, midi-keyboards, Blu-ray players and headphones should be checked out at the Counter. The Library has particularly strong holdings on contemporary composers’ scores and extensive Western and East Asian facsimile scores. Music scores cover a wide range of genres: solo & chamber music, operas, anthologies and compositions for orchestra ranging from classical music to contemporary composers’ works. Items are added on an ongoing basis.

Opening in 1982, the Music Library is one of the subject branch libraries of the University Libraries. It was originally housed in the Main Building and moved to the first floor of the Hung Hing Ying Building in 1996.
Since August 2012, it has been located on the 11/F, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus, near the Department of Music and a roof-top garden. The Music Library is the primary repository of music materials at The University of Hong Kong. It provides research and teaching support for all aspects of music scholarship.

Western large scores can be found here. Like the western scores in a regular size, the shelf arrangement of the western large scores is first by the alphabetical order of the composer’s last name, then by call number within the same composer. A white board with a composer name is used to divide each composer’s scores collected by the Library.
Western music materials can be found here. The collection supports coursework and postgraduate studies in musicology & composition in the HKU Department of Music, scholarly research in music theory and ethnomusicology as well as the musical interests of the University community.
Reference materials and print journals (Serials) are placed in the compact shelves here. These materials include Western and East Asian music dictionaries, encyclopedias, and bibliographies guides. Reference scores feature facsimile editions and composer’s complete works. Reference materials are for library use only.
Anthologies are the published scores with multiple composers in each volume. Some are published to accompany textbooks. They are shelved in the first row of compact shelves and arranged by the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
Music materials written in Chinese, Japanese and Korean are classified by the Library of Congress Classification system. The East Asian Collection includes Chinese music history, Chinese operas, pop music, and instrumental music.
A strong collection of classical music, jazz and East Asian music in CDs and DVDs can be found here. Materials in obsolete formats including LPs and audio/video cassettes are available upon request. The loan quota of audio-visual materials in the Music Library is counted in users’ total loan quota.
