Copyright Law

It should be noted that photocopying and printing facilities provided by the University Libraries are offered on the clear understanding that copying by or for library users does not involve any breach of copyright.

The making of multiple copies of articles from journals is not permitted under Hong Kong copyright law, and copying from books by library staff for library users can only be undertaken where permission has been obtained from the copyright holder.

The production of copies of copyright materials and their distribution for class use without the permission of the copyright holder is a clear breach of copyright which could invite legal action.

Copyright Guidelines

Unauthorized copying in any way of any material (whether written or otherwise) which is subject to copyright is not allowed. Please also refer to the University's "Warning to Photocopier Users".

There are very limited exceptions to this when, but only when, copying is carried out in prescribed libraries. This Library is a prescribed Library, and some copying may therefore take place here.

This is permitted under the following rules, and only under them:

- only a reasonable proportion may be copied, which means:

  1. in the case of a single extract, not more than 4,000 words;

  2. in the case of a series of extracts, not more than 3,000 words per extract with a total of not more than 8,000 words;

  3. in any case not more than 10% of the work;

  4. in the case of poems, essays and other short literary works, each shall be regarded as a whole work and not as part of the volume in which they are published.

Any photocopying to be made in this Library can only be used for the purposes of research, private study, criticism or review. In case any unauthorized photocopying takes place, this Library has the right to disallow immediately the user from making any copy and shall hold the user liable on an indemnity basis for any claims, liabilities, costs and damages this Library and/or the University of Hong Kong may suffer as result of such infringement.
