Library introduces increased borrowing privileges

From Lucinda Wong (Circulation Librarian) and Lorraine Lok (Audio-Visual Librarian)

In order to satisfy user demand for an increase in loan entitlement and to better support research, teaching, learning and knowledge creation at the University of Hong Kong, the Senate Library Committee has agreed to extend library borrowing privileges for the following user categories:

40 books and 3 audio-visual items for teaching and administrative staff

40 books and 3 audio-visual items for research staff

40 books and 3 audio-visual items for postgraduate students

20 books and 3 audio-visual items for undergraduate students, and

                10 books and 3 audio-visual items for non-academic staff.

Similarly, to meet user needs and at the same time promote greater use of the audio-visual collection, the Senate Library Committee has agreed to extend the borrowing privilege of 3 audio-visual items from the Main Library to HKU staff, students, graduates, SPACE teaching staff and students who hold HKUL borrower¡¦s tickets.

The above extensions will take effect from 1 January 2001 for one year on a trial basis to assess whether library resources can cope with such a generous extension of borrowing privileges.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS NEWS

From Iris Chan (Special Collections Librarian)

TOC project completed
We are delighted to announce that the retrospective work of the Table of Contents Project for materials held in the Hong Kong Collection was completed in October.  More than 480,000 bibliographic records of 13,600 titles have been added to the Library catalogue. Users may now perform in-depth searches at the chapter or paper level for Hong Kong materials.

New depository collection added

Our United Nations depository collection was recently transferred to the Special Collections. While the electronic version of UN masthead documents and official records will be accessible from the Libraries homepage, the other print and non-print depository materials are shelved in the Special Collections for consultation by library users.

Government GCO investigation reports donated

The Geotechnical Control Office (GCO) of the Hong Kong Government Civil Engineering Department has recently donated more than 600 volumes of ground investigation reports to the Libraries. These reports were prepared in conjunction with contracts issued by the GCO in 1997, which commissioned various consultancy companies to carry out ground investigations at different locations all over Hong Kong. Providing detailed information about local geotechnical conditions, these technical reports should be of great interest to students and researchers.

Other notable donations

More than 1,300 volumes of books were received from Mrs Margaret Kwan, the grand-daughter of Sir Robert Hotung, and 50 cartons of newspaper clippings on the People¡¦s Republic of China from the Centre of Asian Studies.

Visitors welcomed

Visitors during this period included Ms Elizabeth M. Ride, daughter of Sir Lindsay Ride, and Professor DWY Kwok of the University of Hawaii.

FUNG PING SHAN LIBRARY NEWS

Facelift for the FPS Library

From Esther Woo (Assistant Librarian, Fung Ping Shan Library)

As part of the Old Wing cyclical redecoration project, the Fung Ping Shan Library has been undergoing renovations which began in July.  In order to facilitate major renovation works, such as the alteration of partitions, improvement of lighting, air-conditioning and fire safety installations, the office and stacks on the 5/F were relocated to the 1/F Old Wing for almost three months. At the same time, open stack collections on the 6/F and 4/F were temporarily closed to the public.

Thanks to the patience and understanding of our users, the major works were completed by the end of November. The closed stack areas on the 4/F and 5/F were demolished to make room for more space for the public and for the new Taiwan Studies Collection.  Although the demolition of the storerooms has necessitated relegation of the newspaper collection and ¤s, §ùcollections to our offsite depository, users may be delighted to find that the number of terminals has been significantly increased, and for the first time all current journals are on open display. After the renovation of the 4/F has been completed, all the East Asian language journals will be shelved on that floor while additional reading places will be available adjacent to this collection.

Exhibition on The Life and Works of Professor Lo Hsiang-lin

From Dr Ma Tai-loi (Fung Ping Shan Librarian)

This exhibition was held from October 23 ¡V November 20 in the Main Library entrance lobby. Professor Lo (1906-1978) taught in the Department of Chinese for 17 years from 1951 to 1968. He was a pioneer in Hong Kong studies and promoted this cause by offering courses on Hong Kong 's history and conducting excursions for the students. He published more than 400 articles and 47 books amongst which were the history of Hong Kong prior to 1842, the history of Hong Kong's higher education, and studies on Dr Sun Yat-sen's activities in Hong Kong.

Items on display included Professor Lo's manuscripts, letters to him from such eminent scholars as Chen Yinge and Joseph Needham, and papers written by his students. Also featured were a fascimile of a diploma granted by the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese dated 1902, and other artifacts related to Dr Sun Yat-sen.

Most of the items were selected from the Fung Ping Shan Library's Professor Lo Hsiang-lin Collection.

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT NEWS

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN OUR DIGITAL COLLECTIONS

From David Palmer (Systems Librarian)

Hong Kong Newspaper Clippings Online

As in previous projects, we have digitized and created an online searchable database from printed documents. A link to this new title can be seen on the Digital Library Collections Web page, http://www.hku.hk/lib/dlc.html, under 'HKUL Digital Initiatives', or by pointing the browser directly to http://asterix.lib.hku.hk/news/.

This full-text image database has been created from the original set of newspaper clippings compiled for the Department of Political Science by Dr Norman Miners. The database comprises more than 150,000 images covering the early 1970s to 1994. Most of the topics are related to politics and government in Hong Kong and materials were primarily gathered from the South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong Standard.  More clippings collections will be added later.

More enhancements to the online thesis database (http://asterix.lib.hku.hk/hkuto)

This database, initially released earlier this year, now contains PDF images of the abstract and table-of-contents for HKU theses. Though some exceptions exist*, retrospective work has largely been completed, and has now begun on theses received in 2000. With these additions, HKUTO further highlights a valuable HKU resource and makes the contents more readily accessible.

In a related development, the HKU Senate approved in November a new requirement for postgraduate students entering into M.Phil and Ph.D degree programs beginning from 1 January 2001. This will be the mandatory submission of an electronic copy of their thesis or dissertation (ETD) at the same time that the print copy is submitted.  With few exceptions, the full text of these ETDs will then also be added to HKUTO.

*Please note that some hyperlinks to images will produce exception messages rather than the desired image. In this case, digitization work has not yet been completed, or the thesis in question is restricted.

Web pages for HKU Libraries' Digital Library Collections (DLC) enhanced in speed, functionality and content

HKUL staff have endeavoured over the last several months to enhance the effectiveness of the Web pages for the DLC. These changes were put in place on November 4. The major changes are

the inclusion of e-book titles

the grouping of subject topics into larger subject areas

the faster loading of pages

Changes to a well used resource such as the DLC are bound to bring some disruption to users. We regret the inconvenience caused but believe that these changes will be welcomed by most as a very big improvement. Please try them out at http://www.hku.hk/lib/dlc.html and let us have your feedback.

GENERAL COLLECTION NEWS

New modes of access to our United Nations Depository Collections

From Julia Chan (Collection Development Librarian)

Readers may remember that as of April 25, the University of Hong Kong Libraries was designated a United Nations depository and receives, in Chinese and English, masthead documents, official records, and selected sales publications of the United Nations from various duty stations (New York, Geneva, Vienna, and Bangkok), including masthead documents of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

With the adoption of electronic deposit by the United Nations Publications Board, effective January 2001, masthead documents and official records in electronic format will be available for access via the United Nations Optical Disk System (ODS). However, as the HKU Law Library subscribes to the ODS, our users have already been able to access it. The UN Bibliographic Information System (UNBISnet) and the United Nations Treaty Collection are also available to the HKU community.

To facilitate access to the collection, a web page has been created for the United Nations Depository Collection. The URL is:

http://www.hku.hk/lib/un/               OR

Go to:   http://www.hku.hk/lib

Click:   <Library Collections> under ¡¥Resources¡¦

Click:   <United Nations Depository Collection>

UN print and non-print depository materials are shelved in the Special Collections, 1/F New Wing of the Main Library building. These materials are available to staff, students, visiting researchers as well as the general public for consultation during Special Collections opening hours.

For further information, please contact the Special Collections at 2859 2207. Their staff will be happy to provide any assistance required.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BRANCH LIBRARIES

DENTAL LIBRARY

From Irene Fung (Dental Librarian)

A Knowledge Navigation Centre (KNC) was set up in the Dental Library in early September, providing the latest hardware and software for users to integrate learning, research and digital publishing.

The Dental Librarian gave a seminar on Electronic Research Strategies to students and teaching staff of the Faculty of Dentistry. The seminar was sponsored by the Faculty of Dentistry Committee of Research Management.

The Library recently acquired the following electronic resources: Magnetic resonance imaging, Principles and practice of anesthesiology, Drugs, diseases & anesthesia, Elsevier's encyclopedia of neuroscience, and Pyramid challenge.

Visitors to the Dental Library during this period included Dr Thomas M. T. Waltimo from the University of Helsinki, Finland; Professor Douglas Luke from the Universiti Kepangsaan, Malaysia; Dr Yang Hui from the Department of Psychology, Beijing Normal University; Dr David MacDonald from the Department of Radiology, University of Bergen, Norway; and Mr Peter Cheung, Secretary-General of the University Grants Committee.

EDUCATION LIBRARY

From Mimi Yeung (Education Librarian)

The Education Library started its busy academic year with a series of orientation programmes which lasted from September 4 to October 13. A total of 6 library introductions, 30 guided tours and 3 CD-ROM workshops were arranged during the period to familiarise new students with library facilities and services. Two open bibliographic instruction sessions on how to use CD-ROMs were also arranged in November and December. Bibliographic sessions for M.Ed. and P.C.Ed. students will continue well into the second semester of the academic year.

To facilitate their retrieval, dissertations from previous years once stored outside the Library have been relocated to join the current ones on the newly installed book shelves behind the library counter, making the collection more readily available to library users.

The audio-visual facilities in the Education Library have been upgraded with the acquisition of new headphones and a CD/DVD/LD player. A list of Education Library audio-visual titles in English and Chinese is now available in printed form at the library counter for quick reference.

LEE HYSAN MEDICAL LIBRARY

From Mary Leong (Medical Librarian)

Over the last quarter, preparations have been made to increase the number of e-book, e-journal and e-collection subscriptions provided for our users. One interesting new addition is access to the Internurse web site (www.internurse.com) which offers nursing staff and students a wide range of online resources, including access to six major journals and some useful information and references on topics such as nutrition, diabetes care, wound care, IV therapy, palliative care, and midwifery.

A subject list of current subscriptions was mounted on the library webpage in early October. The headings chosen generally conform with those used for indexing Journal Citation Reports to help users match our holdings against their subject specialties.

Plans have also been in hand for two new discrete collections: a Historical Collection and a Faculty Publications Collection. Once the relevant books have been retrieved from the main collection there will be some slight rearrangements to accommodate these new sections.

The library recently introduced a ¡¥Students¡¦ Corner¡¦ display of articles giving hot tips for managing their studies, hints on sharpening their practical skills, information on careers, a spotlight article on an topic of special interest (such as overseas volunteer work), and a few cartoons on medical topics. Articles are being replaced every two weeks.

An exhibition of books from the collection and of newspaper articles relating to Hong Kong and China was held from November 29 - December 18 to publicise World AIDS Day on  December 1.

LUI CHE WOO LAW LIBRARY

From Sng Chan Yok Fong (Law Librarian) and Irene Shieh (Assistant Librarian)

The following two titles were finally completed and published in November:

1.       Master List of Holdings of Serial Titles, Law Reports & Legislation, & Current Loose-Leaf Publications. 2nd ed. (University of Hong Kong Libraries Publications, No. 15).

2.       Chinese Language Serials, Newspapers & Electronic Databases in the Law Library. (University of Hong Kong Libraries Publications, No. 16).

In conjunction with the Faculty of Law Library Committee, the Chinese language law serials were reviewed with a view to cancelling those which were little used or irrelevant. A total of 15 titles were identified for cancellation, most of which were Chinese newspapers. The only title not cancelled was taken over by the Fung Ping Shan Library.

Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Law Library, Peking University, Ms Yin Li, visited the Library from October 4-13 on a familiarisation tour to observe its operations, services and resources. Arrangements were also made for her to visit the Fung Ping Shan Library, the Main Library Cataloguing Department, the Law Library of the City University, the Legislative Council Library, and the High Court Library.

Mr Cao Shou Ye (±ä¦u¾ç), Senior Judge of the Supreme People's Court in Beijing, visited the Law Library to do some research. Irene Shieh gave him a 2-hour personal research session on WTO and related law.

The library recently took out a subscription to LEXIS.COM, a major online service. Arrangements were made for a total of 5 open and tailor-made training sessions for staff, faculty members, undergraduates and postgraduates.

A series of library instruction classes were held during the first semester, covering topics such as Searching for Legal Materials in the OPAC, Searching for Law Review & Journal Articles, and Searching for HK Cases & Law Reports in Electronic Format. A number of topical legal research sessions were also conducted for LLM students.  Students are invited to suggest new topics for classes, workshops, or tailor-made research training sessions which they would like the library to organise during the next semester. Please email your suggestions to: lawlib@lib.hku.hk.

Users are probably aware that the staircase leading to the library entrance on the first floor has recently undergone a complete overhaul, with the carpets and metal nosing replaced. This has eliminated the potential hazards posed by the worn-out nosing.

As part of our efforts to improve the general environment of the library, several legal prints have been added to various spots inside the library. Observant users will notice that the familiar sight of Lord Denning overlooking the first floor staircase has been replaced with a print of WP Frith¡¦s ¡¥The Plea¡¦, a fine hand-coloured reproduction from the original Victorian printing plate, depicting a scene from Court 1 of the Old Bailey.

MUSIC LIBRARY

From Helen Woo (Music Librarian)

The Music Library has recently added two very important CD-ROM databases to its collection:

1.             RISM Serie A/II (International Inventory of Musical Sources), the most comprehensive work for music manuscripts and printed editions through 1800.

2.             CPM  Plus, the Catalogue of Printed Music in the British Library 1503-1996, which records the most comprehensive collection of printed music in the world, with 755,000 entries.

With assistance from the Systems Department, all stand-alone CD-ROMs and floppy disk programs have now been installed. Internet resources for music have been updated and various e-books for music have been selected.

Two new computers with LCD monitors have replaced the old workstations. New CD, LP and microform cabinets have been acquired to accommodate the rapid growth of the audio-visual collection which has been completely rearranged. New journal titles have been submitted to the Arts Faculty Library Committee for subscription in 2001.

The Music Library participated in the JUPAS Open Day on 14 October with an exhibition of some special music scores.

Some 400 items of duplicate books, scores, journals, CDs and cassettes were donated to the library of the Academy of Performing Arts.
