Title: The potential application of biguanide based compounds in dentistry

Abstract: Chlohexidine bigluconate containing products has been widely used in dentistry for prevention and treatment of periodontal disease and caries prevention. Polyguanidine oligomers, particularly polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) oligomer, are used extensively and safely as disinfectants and biocides, which prevent the growth of different bacteria, fungi and yeasts. With the presence of the biguanide groups and a lipophilic part (alkyl chain) in the same molecule, both CHX and PHMB exhibit their high basicity renders the species in the protonated, cationic form at neutral, physiological pH-values. The study is to understand further the mechanisms of action of these compound against oral pathogens related to dental caries and periodontal diseases and investigate their potential use in dental applications.
