Clinical cases in early orthodontic treatment : an atlas of when, how and why to treat / Julia Harfin, Somchai Satravaha, Kurt Faltin Jr, editors.

D 617.644 C64 H27

This book describes the most common types of malocclusion in children and presents illustrated step-by-step guidance on the procedures employed in their management, with the focus on early intervention. Advice is provided on the challenging decisions of when to start orthodontic treatment and whether to choose a one-phase or a two-phase treatment, taking into account the malocclusion, its severity, and its etiology. Among the topics addressed in individual chapters are the treatment of atypically rotated central incisors, early management of periodontal problems, correction and maintenance of the position of the first upper molar, early treatment of class II and class III malocclusions, use of lingual brackets, management of dental asymmetries, and the Bennun-Harfin protocol for interdisciplinary oral cleft treatment. The most important controversies in early orthodontic treatment are also discussed in detail. The book is enhanced by numerous clinical photographs and presentation of long-term results. It is written by the most experienced team of doctors in the field and will be a valuable asset for all who specialize in odonto-pediatric and orthopedic-orthodontic treatments.

MSCs and innovative biomaterials in dentistry / Marco Tatullo, editor.

D 617.6151 M939

This authoritative reference presents the modern concepts of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and biomaterials as they pertain to the dental field. The book is organized around three main topics: MSCs biology, advanced biomaterials, and clinical applications. The chapters present basic information on stem cell biology and physiology, modern biomaterials that improve bone tissue regeneration, the biomatrices like platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) used to functionalize the biomaterials surface, the strategic and safe intraoral seats of harvesting, the new sources for MSCs, as well as the future perspectives and new challenges in these exciting fields. The contributors are top scientists with a great deal of experience in regenerative dentistry and biomedical research. They offer an international perspective and are richly cross-disciplinary, representing academia, research, and industry. MSCs and Innovative Biomaterials in Dentistry is indispensable reading for students, researchers, and clinicians who need to stay up-to-date on the cutting-edge developments of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applied to dental sciences.

Sport and oral health: a concise guide / Siobhan C. Budd, Jean-Christophe Egea.

D 617.668 B927

This book aims to explore the intricate interrelationship between oral health and sport, with the focus on highly popular team games, endurance sports, and explosive events. In order to understand the vulnerability of athletes of all levels of ability to oral health problems, relevant aspects of sports physiology and training are outlined, as are the predisposing behavioral, psychological, and physiological elements.  Specific sports-related oral risk factors are identified and detailed, and the dental conditions frequently observed in athletes are explained.  The dental clinical reality of athletes reveals a wide spectrum of oral consequences, affecting both soft and hard tissues, that can adversely impact on training and competitiveness.  Principles of dental management are highlighted, and therapeutic solutions provided for the most common dental lesions. Emphasis is placed on preventative measures and solutions adapted to the athlete’s individual needs, as well as the importance of effective collaboration with a diverse team of professionals.  The book will be of interest to dentists, health professionals, sports coaches, athletes, and teachers and students of dentistry and medical disciplines.
