Verified Legislation, Purple Check Lists, and the Loose-leaf Edition of the Laws of Hong Kong (Issue 54)

The print Loose-Leaf Edition of the Laws of Hong Kong held in the Law Library (call no. PR KT4353.1 H7 F90) has recently been updated with Issue 54, which consists mainly of purple Check Lists. So what are purple Check Lists?

Since the launch of the Hong Kong e-Legislation (“HKeL”) on 24 February 2017, verified copies of legislation with legal status are progressively being made available on the HKeL website (Click here for a list of verified legislation). After the verified copy for an Ordinance or item of subsidiary legislation is made available in HKeL, and starting from Issue 54, the Government Printer will no longer publish updates of these pages for adding to the Loose-leaf Edition. Instead, the chapter will be replaced by a purple Check List. Please therefore refer to HKeL for the latest updates or to print copies of verified legislation.

Purple Check Lists will also be published for legislation no longer in effect and new legislation which are not to be included in the Loose-leaf Edition.

For chapters that are yet to be verified in HKeL, updating through replacement pages in the Loose-leaf Edition will continue. As the process of verification of legislation in HKeL will take years to complete, this transitional arrangement is expected to last for some time, until the Loose-leaf Edition is completely phased out.

Contact us for any queries at lawlib@hku.hk.

Orofacial pain biomarkers / Jean-Paul Goulet, Ana Miriam Velly, editors.

D D 617.667 O7 G

This book provides up-to-date information on all aspects of orofacial pain biomarkers. It opens by presenting background information on clinical phenotypes and the neurobiological substrates underlying chronic orofacial pain and by explaining the potential role of biomarkers in the diagnosis, prognostic evaluation, and treatment of orofacial pain. The main section of the book examines the contribution of human and animal studies to the field of biomarkers for orofacial pain and discusses biomarkers for masticatory muscle pain, temporomandibular joint pain, neuropathic face pain, and autonomic nervous system involvement in trigeminal facial pain. The potential impacts of the immune system on orofacial pain biomarkers and candidate gene phenotypes with possible links to chronic orofacial pain conditions are also addressed, and differences and similarities between saliva and serum biomarkers for pain are explained as well. The final section covers research-related issues in assessment methods and statistical analyses used in evaluating biomarkers, identifies future challenges and suggests new directions in the field.

Dental photography: portfolio guidelines / Krzysztof Chmielewski.

D 617.6623 C54

This practical atlas functions as a visual guide for using a camera in dental practice and achieving the essential photographic views. Individual views are detailed with recommended equipment setup, camera settings, necessary accessories, tips for the photographer, and instructions for the patient. The book is designed to function as a stand-up display, providing ease of use to the photographer when used chairside. Whether used as a refresher by an experienced dental photographer or as a guide for instructing staff members on dental photography protocols, this atlas is sure to become a mainstay in clinical practice.

Noncarious cervical lesions and cervical dentin hypersensitivity : etiology, diagnosis, and treatment / edited by Paulo V. Soares, John O. Grippo.

D 617.63 N81

Cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH) and noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are common findings in modern clinical practice. Although research has shown that NCCLs are a multifactorial condition involving the three mechanisms of stress, biocorrosion, and friction, few dentists know how to treat them effectively. Similarly, CDH has been an enigma for many years, and practitioners often try to treat the symptoms rather than seek an answer to their etiology. In addition, little attention has been given to their mutual etiologic mechanisms of cervical stress concentration from occlusal loading and endogenous/exogenous biocorrosion. Therefore, this book approaches CDH and NCCLs together and outlines the history, mechanisms, and, most important, the clinical methods of treatment for these pathologies. It is about time we as dentists learn how to treat and prevent these conditions in clinical practice. This involves greater diagnostic effort and alteration of treatment protocols to (1) reduce dietary intake/exposure to acids, (2) manage reflux diseases, and (3) consider the significance of occlusal therapies. After reading this book, the student or clinician will be able to diagnose and treat clinical cases of NCCLs and CDH.
