Title: Randomized clinical trial on prevention and arresting dental root surface caries using silver diammine fluoride solution in community-dwelling older adults
Abstract: This randomized controlled clinical trial is aimed to compare the effectiveness of three methods in prevention new root caries and in arresting early caries. These are: a) giving oral hygiene instruction (OHI) and provision of fluoridated toothpaste; b) giving OHI, provision of fluoridated toothpaste and annual applications of silver diammine fluoride (SDF) solution; and c) giving OHI, provision of fluoridated toothpaste and annual applications of SDF solution followed by application of potassium iodide solution. The other objective is to assess whether application of potassium iodide solution immediately after application of SDF on early caries lesions will affect the colour of the arrested caries by making them whiter in appearance and hence improving the appearance. A total of 322 community-dwelling elders aged over 55 years were recruited from 12 elderly social centres and they were examined there by one trained examiner. Status of the expose root surfaces, presence of plaque, and denture status were recorded. Evaluation of the main outcome will be conducted after 30 months through a standardized clinical examination.

Title: A randomized clinical trial on the use of sodium fluoride varnish and silver diammine fluoride solution for arresting active dental caries in preschool children
Abstract: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of three topical fluoride application protocols, namely three application of a 30% SDF solution at yearly and weekly interval and three application of a 5% NaF varnish at weekly interval, in arresting dental caries. Children with at least one cavity were selected and clinically examined. The visible plaque index and the dmfs index were recorded. Information about the children‘s backgrounds was collected by a questionnaire. A total of 325 children were randomly allocated into groups. A dental operator will apply the fluoride agents. Follow-up examinations will be conducted every 6 months for 24 months.
